Lepiota flammeotincta Kauffman Cap 1-6cm across, broadly convex becoming flat or uplifted at the margin or sometimes broadly umbonate; whitish background with brown, reddish-brown, purplish-brown, or almost black hairs or scales; surface staining red when bruised, then slowly turning dark purplish brown; dry. Gills free, close; white edges, sometimes brownish. Stem 30-95 x 1-6mm slender, slightly thicker toward the base; white above the ring; hairy like cap; quickly bruising scarlet like cap surface, then turning dark brown. Veil white, membranous partial veil forms a sleeve-like ring on the middle or upper stalk. Flesh white staining pink, red, or orange when bruised, then fading. Spores ellipsoid, smooth, dextrinoid, 6-8.5 x 4-4.8µ. Deposit white. Habitat singly or in small groups in woods, under trees, along trails and paths. Frequent. Found along the Pacific Coast. Season September-November. Edibility not known- avoid. |
